Secondary Projects
Completed in support of the Simmons Graduate School of Information Science Practicum requirements, the projects below focus on Diversity and Administration.
Diversity Project: Building the library's English Language Learner Collection
For the purposes of this project, I reviewed Newton North library's current collection of foreign language titles and, using input from the English Language Learner (ELL) Specialist, created a list of suggested titles for purchase. The English Language Learner Specialist informed me that the top languages spoken by ELL students at Newton North are Chinese, Korean, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, and Pushtu. She suggested that the library obtain copies of classic American Fairy Tales. She emailed, “Many cultural references here in the U.S. are based on fairy tales... Some guy has is has the 'Peter Pan syndrome'... A woman leads a 'Cinderella life'... Having a cultural reference would help our students understand much more of what's going on around them here in the U.S. Specifically, it would be great for the students to have a collection of typical U.S. fairy tales in their home languages, and if possible, find an easy version of the same stories in English.” My list of suggested titles for purchase reflects the ELL Specialists insight.

Administration Project: Organizing the library's Collection of Archive Materials
The Newton North library houses an impressive archives collection of school documents, photographs, yearbooks, and other historical pieces. Having recently moved to a new facility the librarians had the opportunity to store these historical artifacts so they would be more accessible for student research. For the purposes of this project I unpacked the archive materials, arranged the items on the shelves in the archives room and created signage detailing the contents of each shelf.
